KP Sangarsh Samiti urged Indian Prime Minister to order in-depth probe Kashmir situation

January 14th, 2010

Srinagar, October 25 (Vijay Kumar) -Kashmiri Pandit Sangarsh Samiti demands “Truth & Justice Commission” from Union of India through people’s representatives.

In a memorandum, which are circulated to the members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha , President of Kashmiri Pandit Sangarsh Samiti Sanjay K. Tickoo demanded to order in-depth probe Why Indian establishment failed to protect the lives of its citizens in Kashmir?,How thousands of youths crossed LOC pre and after armed uprising in the Kashmir?,Who is responsible of mass exodus of minorities from the Valley and why democratic institutions failed to protect their rights?

Sangrash Samiti alleged in a statement that the Government in Delhi had never had any serious policy on Kashmir, and, instead is being misled by a group of corrupt Central and State bureaucratic set up. These officials are believed to have developed vested interest in the turbulent situations in the State. Since most of the parliamentarians are unconcerned about the happenings in Kashmir, and as a matter of routine it is only Prime Minister or the home minister who speak in both houses of parliament on the issue informing the August houses the details as forwarded to them by the officials of the different security Agencies. It has been constantly observed that the reports deliberated with the Hon’ble Prime Minister and Home Minister is always motivated as per the liking of various Agencies. Since most of the parliamentarians are not directly concerned with Kashmir so it appears that the comments in the August houses parliament are taken as true and based on the facts.

Statement said that, “we demand that the facts be brought to light by the Government through the probe, that what were the factors which turned this peaceful heaven into hell overnight in the year 1988-89. The probe should fix responsibility on the people who contributed to drive the common Kashmiri youth to seek obeisance in violence and fell into the lap of an enemy country. The Commission should also probe the angle of conspiracy between the individual officials of Government security Agencies from centre and the State facilitating the smooth LOC crossings by thousands of Kashmiri youth for arms trainings across and returning with heavy weaponry. As per records available with different Government Agencies 29.9.92 AK47/56 rifles, 10895 pistols/revolvers, 1021 UMG’s, 2096 RPG’s 385 sniper rifles, 69 GPMG’s have so far been seized by the security Agencies in last 20 years. It is also a recorded fact that the security Agencies have caught 28025 trained militants and killed 16774. How is this possible that such a big number of local youth did cross the LOC and return with huge weapon to create havoc in the State without the active support of tools of Government machinery. We demand that all these aspects should be investigated in detail to fix the responsibility on the erring officials”.

Besides, as is known to the State and Central Governments that we the members of Kashmiri Pandit Sangarsh Samiti braved all risks and dangers to stay back in our homes and hearths in the worst kind of situation. We throughout these years of turbulence have been observing another dirty nexus between the politicians local & National political parties. The politicians in Kashmir in convenience with a section of political bigwigs in different National parties have been misleading the Nation on the ground situations to grab more and more financial packages from centre out of which measure portion is pocketed by these politicians, thus playing havoc with the State, the involvement of politicians is also to be probed so that nobody in future could camouflage to mislead the nation. The Commission must also probe factors which led the different Agencies to create havoc by forcible disappearances, questionable encounters and human rights abuses which instead of bringing peace to the State worsened the situation and alienated some segments of the population and led to cross-border terrorism and further violence in the valley.

The Commission must probe factors which led the different security Agencies to create havoc by encouraging forcible disappearances, custodial killings and inhuman tortures which instead of bringing peace to the State worsened the situation and alienating more & more youth from mainstream to join gun totaling youth to fight against Indian writ in the State. The Commission should also probe. The factors about the role of the officials of the State police and civil administration, who worked at the dictates of the militants and other subversive elements and carried forward their agenda.

The Commission after in-depth enquiries and investigations into the above facts must draft a policy document for the Government to be adopted and implemented for the permanent peace in the State to avoid innocent killings of common Kashmiries, distress among the youth and should also find out the ways for the return of Kashmiri migrants from Jammu and other parts of the country.

Kashmir, for the last 20 years has been passing through a worst ever kind of turmoil, which has so far taken a toll of thousands of human lives, destruction of property worth billions of rupees, people have lost social bonding and business has suffered tremendously. Is this the same Kashmir where, the father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi had seen a ray of hope when entire country was burning in communal rights? What has prompted the peace loving Kashmiri people to taken on to arms and fight against the Indian authority with secessionist motivation? What has forced a large section of Kashmiri people to flee from their home land overnight with a fear from once strongly bounded Muslim neighbors. The successive Governments at the centre and the State have so far only tried to escape the responsibility with making pseudo efforts of patchwork, making only short term plans to carry forward the original problem to their successors.

Lebanon Unveils World’s Largest Hummus Plate in Ongoing Feud

January 14th, 2010

As many as 300 Lebanese chefs gathered yesterday in Beirut to make the largest ever plate of hummus  in an attempt to claim the reigns in ownership of the popular chick pea dip.

The new world record is part of an ongoing campaign in Lebanon to reaffirm the country’s claim to a number of dishes being produced in Israel – with the ownership of hummus being one of the main quarrels.

Israeli and Lebanese producers of hummus have been logged in a stiff competition for the growing global appetite for the delicious Middle Eastern dip.

Lebanese producers claim Israel is ripping off ‘Lebanese’ dishes and promoting them worldwide as their own.

The Israelis, for their part, were the previous world record holder for the largest hummus plate, prompting the Lebanese to react.

Officially in a state of war, the two countries appear to be widening the battle front to incorporate the fight for hummus.

The question now remains will other producers of the same dish, including the Syrians, Jordanians and Palestinians, enter the food fight?

Lebanese bloggers have offered their viewpoints on the battle for hummus.

Maya Zankoul ridiculed the battle with a humourous caricature of the event:

Yesterday, Lebanon broke the world record by making the largest hommos plate. I passed by the event location after the plate was made, and did not find it THAT big… So I imagined that after a while someone else would take the challenge of breaking our record and so on and so forth. W ba3den (and next)? Come on someone has to stop this nonsense!

Similar sentiments were echoed on The Cedar Tree blog:

At first, I heard about the largest kibbeh plate and I thought those Lebanese women were so cute. Then came the fight for the largest hummus plate and I thought this is starting to become ridiculous. But despite my personal opinion, apparently the Lebanese feel very passionate about their hummus and so we’re officially in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest hummus serving. I hope everyone’s happy about it. Can we move on now? No. There’s only one more fight left (let’s hope it’s the last) and that’s for the largest tabbouleh plate, scheduled to take place tomorrow on the 25th of October. Okay, now I’m thinking are these people out of their minds? What’s the point? So we make it into the book and then what? Don’t get me wrong; I LOVE Lebanese hummus, but I really think there’s way more important issues that are WORTH fighting for besides food and world records.

There are two questions I would like to find the answer for. One, how much money was spent to make this event today and two, what happened to all the hummus?

A blog post on A Diamond’s Eye View of the World revealed equal bemusement (or amusement) to the event:

I agree that having Israelis and pseudo-Israelis try to correct my pronunciation of “hummus” as “KHumus” – say it with extra phlegm for full effect – is beyond irritating. But claiming a dish by cooking an obscene amount of it? And being PROUD of this? And creating an embarrassingly lame slogan – in English, no less? Good God.

In adding another dimension to the battle, Asad Abu Khalil at the Angry Arab blog highlighted that the origins of  hummus may not even be Lebanese, but Palestinian:

“”No one has the right to call hummus and falafel his national dish,” said Siham Baghdadi Zurub, a Ramallah-based chef and author of the Arabic-language cookbook The Palestinian Cuisine. She argued that in fact Palestinians were the first to make hummus of chickpeas, since the crop was plentiful, rather than from fava beans as done in Egypt and Syria. “Putting copyright on certain dishes is a selfish trend that reflects insecurity and lack of common sense.””

The hummus tug of war between Lebanon and Israel also captured the attention of Twitter users:

Oil Refinery Explodes in Puerto Rico

January 14th, 2010

At around 12:30 am on Friday, October 23, the Gulf Oil Refinery (Caribbean Petroleum Company-CAPECO) in Bayamón (in the metropolitan area), Puerto Rico, exploded massively.  Almost 20 tanks have exploded since then, the fire is still burning although it has been contained, and an immense and never ending tower of smoke is covering the sky. More than a 1,000 people who live in the surrounding neighborhoods have been relocated, and five municipalities have been declared in state of emergency. Activists and scientists have warned about the devastating ecological consequences of this disaster, and how it will affect people’s health. Community leaders of the surrounding neighborhoods have been warning the government for years about the environmental and health implications of living close to an oil refinery.

Nation cannot make progress if people forgets the past history:BJP

January 14th, 2010

Jammu.October 26 (Vijay Kumar) – BJP State Spokesperson Ramesh Arora said that a nation cannot make progress if the people forgets the past history.

Talking to reporters in Jammu Ramesh Arora said ,”We the people of Jammu and Kashmir are sufferers due to Himalayan blunders committed by the leadership after the instrument of accession was signed by Maharaja Hari Singh26th October, 1947 is an historical day and the people of the nation and state of Jammu and Kashmir will never forget this event. The instrument of accession was signed by Maharaja on 26th October and was accepted by Lord Mountbatten, Governor-General of India on 27th October 1947. This acceptance was unconditional like other than 557 princely states”.

He said once unconditional accession was signed and accepted there was no occasion to give power under the constitution of India to the state, for having its separate constitution, separate flag and in corporation of Article-370 in constitution of India, it was also a historical mistake. The questions still remained unanswered, why Indian forces were stopped from taking back the area occupied by Pak army in connivance with Kabali militants? We have committed another mistake which also required to be answered, why matter was referred to UNO when it was our internal issue? Our soldiers have won the battles in the field but we have lost battles on negotiation-table. Even, we cannot solve the Kashmir issue during Tashkent agreement, Shimla agreement and due to this failure the problems is hanging.

Ramesh Arora further said that our state of J&K being a state of strategical importance, was not given due attention to solve the basic problem. Recent statement of the Home Minister P. Chidambaram have more complicated the issue, when he said that majority view will be considered and they have a solution but will not disclose. It will amount to reopening the issue of pelvicite and referendum which is dead. Arora said that it is not there personal problem and BJP will not allow Centre as well as State government to make any compromise beyond the constitution. When we talk that each and every talk should be under the constitution, we mean that constitution as it is and not after changing the same. The proposal of autonomy and self-rule are against the constitution because they will destroy the basic fabric of the constitution. Arora warned the state government not to keep sleeping over the issues as Gilgit-Balitistan area which was already annexed by Pakistan by so called independence and the change of the boundaries is state subject under the constitution and even centre government cannot alter than why state is silent over the issue of “Gilgit-Balitistan”.

BJP warned PM of India and Home Minister that they should not take any decision without taking BJP and other parties into confidence otherwise a nation-wide protest will be there. Arora said we are in touch with central leadership of BJP and we will not allow any compromise which will affect constitution and boundaries of the state.

Ramesh Arora said that only solution is that Indian government and people of India should stand united over the resolution of parliament 1994 and should deal external interference / militancy with firm will.

Israel: “Ordinary Racism” In Media Coverage

January 14th, 2010

Approximately 20 per cent of the country’s population, the Palestinian citizens of Israel (also known as Israeli Arabs) argue that they are discriminated against in many aspects of life. The media coverage of a recent road accident prompted a Palestinian blogger in Israel to comment.

Blogger The Other Door writes about the coverage, in a post called “Very Ordinary Racism”:

A very ordinary road accident: a very ordinary car swerved off its route in a very ordinary way, and crashed in a very ordinary way into a taxi, very ordinary.
The driver of the private car, a very ordinary Jewish man, and his friend, a very ordinary Arab, were killed in the accident in a very ordinary way. Five of the taxi passengers were moderately injured in a very ordinary way, and others were seriously injured in a very ordinary way. The taxi passengers were Jewish theatre actors, very ordinary.
After the street was cleaned of blood in a very ordinary way, the news spread throughout the media in a very ordinary way.
For example, on the Israeli Channel 10 news, a report of 7:34 minutes was broadcast about the accident, 1:08 minutes about the Jewish driver and his family, and the rest about the Israeli actress and her friends. As for the Arab who was killed they were content just to mention his name and that he was a lawyer who lived in Kiryat Shmona, very briefly showing a picture of him. It is no coincidence that I forgot his name immediately after the report had ended…

Hong Kong Property Bubble Bursts Into Public Outrage

January 14th, 2010

Earlier in October, an apartment in Hong Kong was sold for USD$57 million, a recording breaking price, locally and globally. The 6,158 square foot duplex apartment is in a building called “Conduit Road 39″ located at the western mid-levels of Hong Kong Island. The unidentified buyer is from Mainland China.

Recording breaking price in time of recession

At the same time, Hong Kong has become the number one in the income disparity list. As the property market keeps rising in time of recession due to the inflow of hot money, the dream of sweet home is getting further and further away from ordinary people, such as 貝卡 from uwants:

“Conduit Road 39″was sold at a record breaking price of HKD70,000 per square feet, if people like me who want to buy in the apartment, here is the deal:

No more new clothes, good food, traveling and fancy mobile, and what’s more
Cannot support a wife, nor kid, then I could have HKD7000 per month to pay the mortage.
In ten months, I could buy in a square foot.
In ten years, I could buy in a bit more than 10 square…
In 100 years, I could buy in the bathroom of the apartment in Conduit Road 39.
Then I called up fortune teller asking her how many years I could live on,
she answared that I had 1,300 years to come,
Then I could buy in an apartment when I were in my 800 years…
Stay away from the city center… and then from Hong Kong

When answering the question of a professional couple who could not afford to buy a decent house in downtown area, the Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang suggested them to build their home from smaller apartment unit away from the city, where there are still apartments marked at HKD4000 (USD520) per square foot.

Erynnyes from Those were the day discussed the implications of Tsang’s answer:

    若連律師、醫生也無法在中環買樓,要像煲呔說到偏遠地方買4000元一呎的樓,那其他人又怎樣?豈不連4000元一呎的樓也買不到?B說,假若有一天連律師、醫生也要「進駐」新界之時,到時新界樓價,又豈止4000元一呎?那其他打工仔又怎樣?難道要搬到深圳住?煲呔是否不明打工仔的困苦?

If professional like lawyer and doctor could not afford to buy apartment in Central district and that they have to buy in HKD4000 per square foot apartment away from city center, how about the others? How could they afford the HKD4000 per square foot? B said, if one day lawyers and doctors have to move to New Territories, the property market in New Territories would definitely exceed the HKD4000 per square foot. How about ordinary workers? Does it imply that they have to move to Shenzhen (in Mainland China)? Does Donald Tsang understand the difficulties of ordinary workers?

In fact the Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang Ying-yen, has spelled out his vision for Hong Kong earlier this year that “by 2020, improved road and rail networks may mean Hong Kong people could be better off living in Guangdong than staying input.”

Hung One Bean was outraged by such logic:

    有錢就自己人,冇錢就賤過人─唔該過主,或,你應該衡量下自己既能力,係咪適合係香港居住,當然,來打工是歡迎的,正是有見及此,即使付出昂貴的公帑,都要興建高速又完善的運輸系統。

When you have money, you belong to the family, if you don’t please leave. Or you have to evaluate your own ability if you can fit into Hong Kong. Of course, you are welcomed to work here, that’s why the government is spending so much money to build the high speed railway system.
Money game, number game

Recently a video clip of a TV drama in 1999 in which the protagonist was complaining about the economic situation when the property bubbles had devastated the middle class and the poor has been circulated widely among Internet users via youtube and facebook. Because of copyrights issue, the clip has been taken down several times but netizens keep on uploading and circulating the clip around. Below in a version that remixes the sound of the protagonist with photos of government officials, property developers and the poor:
